“Hương Sắc” – Fragrance & Hues. Flowers and Women in a Contemporary Symphony of Art

Forty paintings by eighteen contemporary artists come together in “Hương Sắc” — a space where beauty is shaped through emotion and color. Working across silk, oil, lacquer, pastel, and watercolor, each artist contributes a distinct voice to a visual symphony that celebrates the enduring beauty of flowers and women.

A Space That Honors Beauty

Hương Sắc presents works imbued with femininity, clarity, and an unmistakable Asian sensibility. Here, the two motifs — flowers and women — intertwine, forming a soft yet vivid visual dialogue.

Flowers are not merely symbols of beauty, but embodiments of feminine breath and presence. The women depicted in these works appear as extensions of nature itself, where color and line weave together to recount memory, tenderness, and the quiet grace preserved over time.

Reflecting on this gathering, Lê Hương Trà, Co-Founder of B&C Maison d’Art, shares:“Hương Sắc is not only an exhibition, but a tribute to the women who quietly make life more beautiful, gentle, and humane. We are honored to serve as a bridge between artists and art lovers — a space where each work finds its kindred spirit and art resonates with everyday life.”

Distinct Voices Across Materials

Each of the eighteen participating artists brings a singular artistic identity, collectively shaping a space where the beauty of flowers and women shines through diverse painterly languages. Featured artists include: Nguyễn Thanh Bình, Quách Đông Phương, Nguyễn Nghĩa Cương, Ngô Đức Hoàng, Nguyễn Thùy Vân, Huỳnh Thống Nhất, Đinh Ngọc Cảnh, Nguyễn Thu Hà, Đoàn Xuân Tùng, Hồ Lan, Nguyễn Mạnh Cường, Trần Cường, Trần Dương, Nguyên Pastel, Phạm Vũ, Đặng Vũ Hoa Lê, Vũ Thùy Mai, and Nguyễn Như Ngọc.

In conversations with Travellive, artists from different generations shared reflections on their practice. For Nguyên Pastel, pastel is “a language that speaks of the final beauty of things before transformation — where each fine layer of pigment carries emotion and touches the deep stillness of memory.” Weathered brick courtyards, moss-stained daybeds, and fallen petals after rain are rendered through this delicate and rarely practiced medium, evoking a sense of intimacy with nature.

Meanwhile, the silk paintings of Vũ Thùy Mai exude purity and softness. She notes:“Silk is where emotion whispers through luminous color. It demands gentleness, precision, and femininity, yet must still convey inner strength. Mastering silk — especially the layered dry technique — requires absolute discipline. I sketch carefully on paper before working on silk, allowing each layer of color to reveal the deeper beauty of nature and humanity.”

Both silk and pastel require careful preservation, sensitive to humidity and environmental conditions. Silk paintings are built through layered washes, while pastel — applied to specially prepared paper — ensures color adherence and longevity. For Ngô Đức Hoàng, each medium opens a distinct mode of expression, reflecting both technical mastery and artistic identity. No detail in his work is incidental. From the buttons of Thai ethnic dress to the motifs of Hmong and Dao textiles, every element carries cultural memory and lived tradition.

He shares:“My painting moves toward reduction. I do not focus on rendering every facial detail or ornament, but on capturing the ‘spirit’ of the subject through condensed shapes, lines, and color. A true artwork does more than demonstrate technique — it conveys a message and a personal vision.”Deeply inspired by the Red Dao community, he distills iconic elements — such as the red headscarf — into simplified forms, blending traditional aesthetics with a contemporary minimalist sensibility.

A Layered ExperienceEach artwork is like a compressed archive, containing layers of information and emotion. When viewers “unpack” it through personal experience, a rich inner world unfolds. As Ngô Đức Hoàng reflects, the core value of an artist lies in discovering and affirming one’s unique voice — a challenge that ultimately allows the work to endure over time.

At “Hương Sắc,” audiences are invited not only to admire beauty, but to listen to the emotional pulse of the artists — where flowers, women, and color merge in harmony.

The exhibition remains open to the public through November 16, 2025, at B&C Maison d’Art, 82G Thợ Nhuộm Street, Hanoi.
