In conversations with Travellive, artists from different generations shared reflections on their practice. For Nguy\u00ean Pastel, pastel is \u201ca language that speaks of the final beauty of things before transformation \u2014 where each fine layer of pigment carries emotion and touches the deep stillness of memory.\u201d Weathered brick courtyards, moss-stained daybeds, and fallen petals after rain are rendered through this delicate and rarely practiced medium, evoking a sense of intimacy with nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the silk paintings of V\u0169 Th\u00f9y Mai exude purity and softness. She notes:\n\n\u201cSilk is where emotion whispers through luminous color. It demands gentleness, precision, and femininity, yet must still convey inner strength. Mastering silk \u2014 especially the layered dry technique \u2014 requires absolute discipline. I sketch carefully on paper before working on silk, allowing each layer of color to reveal the deeper beauty of nature and humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both silk and pastel require careful preservation, sensitive to humidity and environmental conditions. Silk paintings are built through layered washes, while pastel \u2014 applied to specially prepared paper \u2014 ensures color adherence and longevity.\n\nFor Ng\u00f4 \u0110\u1ee9c Ho\u00e0ng, each medium opens a distinct mode of expression, reflecting both technical mastery and artistic identity. No detail in his work is incidental. From the buttons of Thai ethnic dress to the motifs of Hmong and Dao textiles, every element carries cultural memory and lived tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He shares:\n\n\u201cMy painting moves toward reduction. I do not focus on rendering every facial detail or ornament, but on capturing the \u2018spirit\u2019 of the subject through condensed shapes, lines, and color. A true artwork does more than demonstrate technique \u2014 it conveys a message and a personal vision.\u201d\n\nDeeply inspired by the Red Dao community, he distills iconic elements \u2014 such as the red headscarf \u2014 into simplified forms, blending traditional aesthetics with a contemporary minimalist sensibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Layered Experience\n\nEach artwork is like a compressed archive, containing layers of information and emotion. When viewers \u201cunpack\u201d it through personal experience, a rich inner world unfolds.\n\nAs Ng\u00f4 \u0110\u1ee9c Ho\u00e0ng reflects, the core value of an artist lies in discovering and affirming one\u2019s unique voice \u2014 a challenge that ultimately allows the work to endure over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
